Isn’t it crazy that winter officially began on December 21st?! It seems like winter had been here for a couple months already! Grant and I spent Christmas in Minneapolis, and they have a TON of snow…over 40 inches so far! I love that I wouldn’t normally spend so much time out in the snow if it weren’t for our new puppy, Max! We are working to housetrain him, which requires much time standing outside in the freezing cold waiting and wishing and hoping for our little furry fella to make some business happen. Usually this is what happens:

He sits down at my feet, as if something exciting is about to happen. Silly pup, you’re supposed to be sniffing around, finding just the perfect spot to do you-know-what! What are you waiting for me for?! The photo above on the right is what he looks like after we play…he loves sticking his snout in the snow!
When I took him out this morning, I was awed by all the beauty outside. There was a light dusting of snow during the night, which covered everything in white. I couldn’t help but go back outside and take some photos!
Snow and ice-covered cobwebs? Cool!

When I lived in Albuquerque, I did a photo-a-day project for 62 days, and it was a blast. That year in Albuquerque was such a fun, wild adventure, and when I look back at the photo-a-day project, I feel like I am there. The photos bring back emotions and thoughts and smells and memories that I treasure, and that I would have forgotten if it weren’t for the photos. {You may view the photos here…just don’t judge the photos or the blog…I have grown a TON as an artist since spring of 2009!} So…I am going to take on a new, but similar project. I have decided to take a self-portrait each month. The purpose of the photo is to capture a general mood or theme or event of the month. I have LOVED seeing and reading about Gail’s self portrait each month, and she has inspired me to take on the project. She just ended her one year project, and she has a fabulous idea of making a book out of the self-portraits as a way to capture the essence of who she is now, in 2010 and beyond, to pass down to her children someday. I have always been a journal-er, and I love the idea of someday passing my journals onto my children as inspiration & encouragement to them…and so that they believe that I really was “cool” once upon a time! =) I’m hoping to do the same with these monthly self-portraits. My goal is to challenge myself with unique photos that represent me in this time and place of life. I thought I would kick this series off with a smiling-at-the-camera photo. Even though it didn’t require much creativity or artistic ponderings…it does capture the theme of this month! A face filled with joy after a wonderful first Christmas with my husband. This is the get-up I wore most frequently this month, waiting in the frEEZing cold for Max to do his thing!

I am eager to see what 2011 has to hold, and am super excited to document it along the way! Thank you Gail for the inspiration!
