Last week Grant and I spent a few days in Colorado, one of our favorite places. We planned this mini vacation for a few reasons: 1) as a way to get away from our routine during this very busy fall season. 2) to visit one of my best friends who lives in Denver, and 3) to celebrate our one-year wedding anniversary, though a little early. Not only did we have an amazing time together exploring the city and spending time with Kim, we also ended up with a unexpectedly ironic hotel/B&B adventure.
When we planned out our trip, I had the genius (you’ll get why I say that in a sarcastic tone after you hear the story!) idea of staying our first two nights in a ‘typical’ hotel and then splurge on a quaint bed and breakfast our last night as a part of our one-year celebration. When we first arrived, we checked in at the Double Tree Inn, and we got upgraded to the Presidential Suite at no extra cost. We walked into the room and our mouths dropped! HUGE! I mean, arguably larger than the first floor of our house! We quickly noticed the large, plush furniture and big screen tv in the living room area. We continued further into the suite to discover a mini kitchen/bar area next to the lovely kitchen table. As we scoped things out, I heard Grant yell out, “honey there’s even a guest bathroom in here!” We beamed when we stepped into the master bedroom, that was closed off with large double doors. We don’t often have the luxury of sleeping on a king sized bed, and that huge bed looked incredible! There was a deck and a jaccuzi (which I am SO sad we didn’t have time to use!) and towels galore. They really must think anyone who books the Presidential Suite is going to have a huge party in that jaccuzi. Needless to say, we felt like a million bucks staying there! The breakfast was healthy, fresh and delicious and I loved having a fitness room to fit in an early workout before starting off on our Coloradan adventures.
So how does that story fit in with the picture above, with the look of question on my face? Enter part two.
After two nights of living luxuriously, we packed up to check into our lovely little B&B…or so we thought. The closer we got, the more and more we felt like we were in a part of town we didn’t want to be. We arrived at the house with the sign in the front…right across from a large park with strange men sleeping on the lawn. Immediately our hearts sank as we began to realize that this was not going to be a glamorous experience. We were given the grand tour of the house, and once we were in our room, we looked at each other with amazement. This was not what we had signed up for! The bed was hardly even a queen, and we could feel each and every spring when we sat on it. We decided to laugh about it and make the most of it. During our stay, a few funny (looking back, at least!) things happened. The air conditioner would occasionally shut itself off, and constantly leaked on the floor. We enjoyed the jaccuzi…and when we went to shower in the morning, we realized the drain does not work so well, as the tub was still half full from the night before! A big chunk of tile fell off from the step in the bathroom, and the outlet next to the vanity just happened to stop working while I was blow-drying my hair.
It was quite ironic that the b&b was our “splurge”! We did bring our complaints to the owner, who was extremely gracious in dealing with the situation.
Despite our less-than-thrilling b&b experience, we had a great trip. We will just be a little more cautious about eagerly signing ourselves up for an unknown bed and breakfast next time!
