I’m dreaming…

of green grass, tank tops, sun dresses, walking barefoot in the grass, sleeping with windows open,  running outside, weddings, outdoor photo shoots, flip flops…SUMMER!

Don’t get me wrong, I love Iowa winters. Yes, I’m one of those crazy ones who actually enjoys snow and chilly weather because with that comes big comfy sweaters, hibernating at coffee shops next to a fireplace, snuggling up in blankets, meaningful conversations, colorful hats, sledding (which I have yet to do this season!), snow shoeing, baking warm cookies…and the list goes on! However, it was been a looonng winter already. It’s been the craziest Iowa winter I’ve experienced, and I find myself dreaming of July! Will this ice and snow ever thaw out?!

I look at these photos of the beautiful Sarah, and I can almost feel the warmth of sunshine from that day! Come, spring, come!

New Product

Introducing a fun new product for this year!  I had orignally pictured this product for wedding clients, but I love it for seniors and families as well. This is a 20×20 or 30×30 canvas gallery wrap, designed with 30-40 of your favorite images from your photo session. It’s a great way to showcase  your photos!

This first example is from Erika’s senior portrait session (view her session here):allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer51The gallery wraps are 1 1/2 inches thick:allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer71

And one of the best parts about gallery wraps is that they come ready to hang. No need to save up for a very expensive frame, just put a nail in the wall and hang your gorgeous piece of artwork!allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer61Here is the gallery wrap Allison and her family ordered (see the images from their session here). I love the blend of colors and how it speaks their family’s personality to well!allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer41

The New Look!

allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer27For those of you who have been anxiously awaiting photos of my paint project…here they are! I’ve been waiting to post these because I’ve been hoping to find a few more things to complete my room: a cool area rug, some fancy patterned curtains to drape off to the side of the door to the deck (I took down the long, panel blinds), and something from Uppercase Living to put above the grouping of white photos. But…it may be a while before the room is “complete”, so here are the photos of my new look! This first one is of course, a before shot of the plainness of tan walls:allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer28…and voila! We have color!! I find myself amazed at the power of color. It brings a sense of life and freshness to a room. It inspires creativity & organization.

This will sound super cheesy, but color like this makes me happy! =) It makes me want to just hang out in this room and bask in its goodness. And delight in the fact that we have been created with 5 phenomenal senses to take pleasure in the little things of life!allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer25I love how the dark gray makes my black & white photos pop! allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer24allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer23I found this fun piece for above my sink at Pier One. It has 9 little hooks on it to  hang fun things! I saw this “Vow to be different” in a magazine and was inspired by it: allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer26Vow to be different.

Vow to add some splashes of color to life.

Vow to look at whatever situation it is in front of you from a positive angle.

Vow to pursue that dream you’ve been waiting to go after.

Vow to love others deeply.

Vow to not compromise what you stand for in the face of challenges.

Vow to laugh. Everyday.

Vow to be different.

Toad Valley Tasting

I met Allison George when I photographed Ashley & Brendan’s wedding at the Toad Valley Golf Course in August, and it has been so fun these past few months to work with the George family and get to know them more. The more I am around them, the more I love them! Last night they hosted a tasting for the brides and grooms who will be having their wedding/reception at the golf course. This is such a great idea, since the couples usually don’t get to eat much of the dinner at their own wedding! It also gave them an opportunity to see the reception hall set up and decorated like it will be for the day of their wedding. Allison had a few of her favorite vendors come to this event, and I had the honor of being one of them! I had a small table set up with sample albums and my laptop with a slideshow of images, and I got to meet some really neat couples who are in the thick of wedding planning!

Allison also had a design company called Ephemera there as well as a cake company called Goodies Made with Love. Read more about them below!  Here are some photos from the evening:

allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer15Sample display of the head table. Near the end of the event, a couple sat where the bride and groom will at the reception…I guess they had to feel it out, feel what it will be like to be at the head of their own table! allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer18Allison arranged different themed centerpieces for each table, as a way of sharing decorating ideas. I love this one, since it fits the golf course theme and…you got it…because it’s green! =)allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer19This was one of my favorite foods I got to taste. I’m not sure what it was called, but it was a sweet scone-like treat with raisins and nuts. Yum!allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer17As I mentioned earlier, the owners of Ephemera were at the tasting and I am THRILLED I got to meet them! Arin and Karen were best friends in college, and began their own stationary studio. They are fabulous women with spunk, personality, authenticity and style! They are brilliant designers, and they create unique & gorgeous wedding invitations!

Aside from wedding invitations, they also do: save the date cards, business identity, website designs, packaging, classes & workshops, and they serve cupcakes to their customers one day a month! This one was my favorite: allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer13 Check out these details! I love the different textures of the papers, and even the stitching around the edges!  And the next image - guess who this invite was designed for?! None other than an Allison! =)allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer12

allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer20Here is another of my favorites of their designs below. I love the color and the overall design - it’s irresistable!allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer14

The cake company is called Goodies Made with Love, owned by Amy. Amy makes unbelievable cakes!! She made mini cupcakes for sampling, with 3 different types of frostings. She is an extremely talented cake decorator! Here is a sampling of her cake:  allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer16And to top of the cake…toads! What else?!

allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer21

Allison, thank you for a wonderful evening at Toad Valley! It was an honor to be there with your 2010 brides and grooms, and I can’t wait to photograph another wedding at the beautiful golf course!

January 30, 2010 - 2:00 pm Allison George - FUN! I forgot to even talk to you about the photos you were going to take! I love them. You did a great job, as always. It was a super fun evening. I think the couples are all excited about the upcoming year, too. Thanks. You rock.

#38…check!

It’s been way too long since I’ve posted on checking off a goal on my 101 list! There are quite a  few that I have accomplished, but haven’t yet blogged about, so I’ll start by catching up with this one!

#38: spend a week-long retreat at my parents’ condo in Colorado

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I spent the summer of 2006 at one of the most beautiful places in the US - at Snow Mountain Ranch, YMCA of the Rockies. I was a team leader for the Navigator’s Summer training program. (Check out the promo video here.) It was an intense summer of discipleship, working at the Ranch, building relationships,  and learning how to authentically follow Jesus. It was a life-changing summer for me in many ways…and it was for my parents as well! When they came to visit me, they fell in love with that area of Colorado (near Winter Park), and a few months later, they decided to purchase a condo in Granby (small town nearby) as a get-away home. I love that they have a place there, and it’s sad I’m not able to spend time there more often! In November, my parents and I spent a week at the condo, and I loved every minute of it! It was the perfect mix of sight-seeing, going to concerts, exploring, snow-shoeing, shopping, and also reading, resting, and relaxing!

Here are my parents as we waited…and waited…and waited for our train. For some reason, they always seem to run a few hours behind!

dsc_1995_1dsc_2005dsc_2006I’ve decided that when I buy a house someday, I will build myself a wood fence! I love these!dsc_2025_1dsc_2036_1A cool bride in Grand Lake: dsc_2052dsc_2060My two favorite spots at Snow Mountain Ranch: 1) Columbine Point. Absolutely incredible view. Somehow, the presence of God feels so much stronger here than any other place I’ve been. Each time I’m here, I can’t help but worship the God who made these enormous, beautiful mountains.dsc_1954

and 2) this rock,  on the top of a mountain. I spent hours here during my summer at SMR,  wrestling with God about different things, and reflecting on life. A setting like this seems to put life in perspective for me!dsc_2128_1dsc_2117This sky show was incredible! I was sitting in the lodge, with my back to the window and when I saw sun streaming in from behind me, I turned around and saw this spectacular sight! Half the sky was absolutely dark, and half of it had blue skies with the sun peeking out! Wow!dsc_2134

It finally snowed the night before we traveled back to Iowa. Perfect timing! During our week there, we got to enjoy unusually warm, sunny weather, and also  fresh snow to snow shoe in!dsc_2149dsc_2172dsc_2178And lastly, here are my parents and I!img_4789_1

January 11, 2010 - 8:47 am Carrie Ostreko - you are a perfect mix of your mom and dad..super cute family! great photos are usual! the colors are soooo vibrant. Love them.

Save the Date Cards

If you are planning a wedding that is more than 4-5 months out, save-the-date cards are a perfect way to announce your wedding plans to friends and family. They can either be ordered as 4×6 thick cards, or as magnets. Allison & Brandon ordered these cards, and I love how they turned out!

A look back at 2009

What an incredible, exciting, challenging, life-changing year! A year of change and of chasing my dreams. I love thinking back to the beginning of 2009, as I had no idea what was in store for me! Here are a few highlights from the year:

1. I finished up my 2nd year of EDGE Corps with the Navigators in Albuquerque. It’s hard to believe I spent a year of my life in New Mexico! To even begin recounting the highlights from this experience is a daunting task, but here are a few:  developing life-long relationships with students at the University of NM & my staff team, seeing students catch the vision of impacting UNM for Jesus,  hosting monthly dinners for 50+ students, leading the worship team, never-ending encounters with cockroaches, countless runs & walks in the mountains, learning how to deeply love people…and SO much more! Here are a few of my favorite photos from Albuquerque:

This was my favorite street, especially at night, as the Sandia Mountain turns pink at sunset! It was breathtaking each time I saw it!

abq2abqKim was my teammate who I lived with and worked with…we basically shared every part of life together during EDGE Corps! She is an incredible woman of God, and I pray that God has us living in the same state again someday!abq4

This photo cracks me up each time I see it, so I just have to include it for you! It was taken at one of our Friday Night Bites (monthly dinners).  Talk about random!abq3

2. In January, I decided to begin my very own wedding photography business! During my year on EDGE Corps, I discovered I could not NOT pursue my dream of photography! I second shot for a handful of weddings, and did as much research about weddings and running a photography business as I possibly could! I first chose the name “Allure Photography” for my business (you can even check out the old Allure blog here!), but I didn’t feel like it represented me very well. I wanted to establish my business upon the value of building relationships with my clients so that they don’t merely feel like clients, but rather close friends of mine. Thus, I decided using my name for my business would be a much better representation of my personality!

3. In May, I attended the Melissa Jill 2-day workshop in Phoenix.  I’ve written about this workshop a few times, so if you’d like to read more about it, you can do so  here and here.

4. I shot my first real wedding on May 24th in the Jemez Mountains and the next day, I moved back to Iowa!

allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer4allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer5

5. I spent a month of the summer overseas. I mainly stayed in Amsterdam but also spent a week in Norway and Belgium. An unbelievable trip that has left me with a huge hunger to go overseas again! By far, Norway is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Here are a few of my favorites photos from Norway, and you can click here and here to read more about my experiences in  the Netherlands.

allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer9allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer7allison-marie-photography-des-moines-wedding-photographer6

6. I purchased my very own condo. It has been so fun to decorate it and make it feel like home! God brought me the best roommate ever, and we have loved hosting parties here this fall!

homestudio2

7. My dad and I hiked the Grand Canyon…an unbelievable experience!! You can go to my post here to read all about this wild adventure!

8. I developed an even deeper love for my family and friends, as many things that happened in 2009 wouldn’t have been possible without their support and encouragement!

So there you have it, the main highlights of 2009 in a nutshell! I  have spent hours dreaming up possibilities of what may take place in 2010…although I have no idea what may be headed my way! I am not one to set New Year’s Resolutions for myself, but I love dreaming up “impossibles” - lofty goals that I can only dream of achieving!

2010, may you be filled with adventures and laughter, deep friendships and engaging conversations, learning new things and becoming more and more who it is that I have been created to be!

January 7, 2010 - 5:58 pm kristen holly - Hi Allison! Love your blog, and your work is beautiful! Congrats on all the changes this year, and here's to another wonderful one! :)

January 4, 2010 - 8:13 am Melissa Jill :) - What a year you've had!!! You are such a beautiful person inside and out! Keep seeking after Jesus with everything you are and I'm sure the coming years will be packed full of goodness and adventure as well! And your blog is looking awesome by the way!

January 4, 2010 - 1:48 am KrisD Mauga - Allison~ great job, great perseverance! Continue with your dreams! We all take our own route to our destination... their many roads on a map!

January 3, 2010 - 5:29 pm Jon Roen - What a great summary of your year Allison - and great pics to go with it :))). It was a year of growth and change, friends and fun, memories to remember and enjoy. And we LOVE having you live nearby! Mom

Any Suggestions?

Hello! I am on the hunt for a good point-and-shoot camera. I hardly take photos at events anymore because it’s silly to whip out an enormous professional camera to a casual event…and for my “little”  point-and-shoot, it’s way too massive to toss in a purse! When I bought it years ago,  it was the top one on the market, and now it’s plain ‘ole big and bulky!

Does anyone have suggestions on a decent quality, compact camera? Add a comment and cast your vote!

And because a post is always better with a photo, here’s one of my faves. I took this at Snow Mountain Ranch in Colorado last month:

January 6, 2010 - 8:50 pm Kimberly - i have a canon powershot sd1000 and i love it! it's 7.1MP with a 3x zoom lens, and it takes decent video too. it's cute and sleek and tiny and clean ... pretty much awesome.

December 31, 2009 - 11:09 am Karen - I use a Sony Cybershot for my point and shoot because I don't like to take out my big camera either! I love the quality photos it takes and it is so small and compact and I can bring it anywhere!

December 31, 2009 - 8:02 am Gail - My hubby and I inherited a Canon PowerShot from his mom last year and we LOVE it for little stuff. I highly recommend that line! :)

December 29, 2009 - 8:28 am Cindy - I actually just bought a new point and shoot - the Canon Powershot. I've been really happy with it so far, and it has 12 MP and 4x optical zoom. And that's about the extent of my camera knowledge!!

December 28, 2009 - 10:23 pm Betsy - I only know this information because my brother, who over researches his purchases, has been looking at getting a digital camera. The main thing he has found is that with the basic cameras, the only brand that still has a view finder (as well as the screen on the back) is Canon. Which I suppose doesn't make much difference if you're never going to shoot outside in broad daylight. Hope that helps.

Merry Christmas!

I want to shout out a special “Merry Christmas!” to all my wonderful clients from this past year. Thank you so much for allowing me to follow after my passion and do what I love most! It was a great year; you were a blast to work with! I wish you the best in all that this next year has in store for you. Don’t be strangers - I’d love to stay updated on what’s going on in your lives!

Have a very blessed Christmas day! 2009-review
