  • Hello and welcome to my blog! My website is where you will get a feel for my work as a wedding photographer, pricing information, and other details, but this blog is where I get to share my life with you. I'll be sharing things I learn, things that make me laugh, things that inspire me, things that frustrate me, the joys of being a newlywed, the sweet love stories of my clients and so much more!

I am a Kansas City wedding photographer; contact me for more information regarding your wedding day.

January Self-Portrait

Either I am way too ambitious, or I set too easy-to-reach goals for 2011…because we’re 14 days into January, and I have crossed off one goal, and am getting pretty close to checking off my second. First, I sold my Sigma 70-200 lens! I put a listing for it on Open Source Photo Forum (an excellent photography forum, especially for new photographers), and it sold within a couple days. Then I got to do what I have been SO eager to do…purchase the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR II lens, and it arrived in the mail today! I am SUPER excited to use it for portraits and especially weddings in low-light situations. The Vibration Reduction allows it to be hand-held at slow shutter speeds, even down to 1/8th, and produce a tack-sharp photo. That’s amazing technology!

My second goal that I am getting close to crossing off is redesigning my office. I painted the walls, put curtains up, took down my old desk and bought in a new one, purchased a cool dresser and a globe (for my hubby’s liking!). Remember the tutorial I linked to for painted wallpaper? If not, find my original post here: New Office Brainstorming. I decided I would tackle this project, and it has taken hours upon hours so far! Why would I spend so much time painting my walls? Yes, it’s totally unnecessary, but it’s my wedding off-season. And I am an artist who constantly needs a creative outlet, whether something so important as a wedding to photograph….or mere walls to paint. I love being able to put hours into a project like this, and then stand back and admire work. There’s something so satisfying in that to me. While I paint, I’ve been loving to listen to music, or photography podcasts on SHOWIT Live, or sermons by one of my favorite speakers, John Piper.

So, for my Self-Portrait for January: deep concentration by a gal who loves DIY projects and taken with my new 70-200 lens!

A) Are you HAND PAINTING all of that??? B) If you are, how the heck do your lines look so perfect?? C) I want a wall like that in my office now!!

[...] New office! I wanted it to feel light and open and refreshing…and that’s how it turned out! The painted wallpaper project (tutorial found on Jones Design Company here) was QUITE the project. It’s unfortunate I didn’t keep a log of my hours…although that might’ve been a little depressing! I learned that I love painting. I learned that I am NOT good at eye-balling whether something is straight or not. My laser leveler saved the day. I learned that I am not a perfectionist. There are many, many, many imperfections about this painted pattern! Just don’t look too closely! I learned that patience and perseverence is essential. I really love how it turned out, but not enough to continue on the wall with the window (as I had originally planned!). Overall, it was such a fun project! I don’t think I would ever take on the task again, but I’m glad I did it! In case you missed it, this project was featured for my January self portrait here. [...]
