Book Wreath

Remember my do-it-yourself mishap in February? I made a festive red heart wreath, and when I hung it on my window, it broke! So, when February was over, it was time to take down my {re-created} red wreath and replace it with something non-Valentines day.

I found this great tutorial from Jones Design Company (yes, the same place I found the tutorial for the painted wallpaper!), and I couldn’t resist tackling this project. I love old books, and it ended up just perfect on my old window! This project was very time consuming, but I’m really enjoying the end result:
If you haven’t noticed, I’ve definitely caught the DIY decorating bug. I’ve always loved interior design, but in this season when I am not swamped with weddings, I have time to experiment here and there. I have a feeling this bug is going to stay around for quite a while…there are endless possibilities!

Stay tuned tomorrow for March’s self-portrait and some updates on our move to Kansas City!

Allison–

This is soo weird!! We are tooo alike! I have all the supplies for a book wreath that I have been wanting to create all week. I plan on hanging it above my mantle. My friend Maggie showed the idea to me and we had wanted to make them together at some point.

So it was pretty time-consuming huh? I didn’t think it looked too bad but that’s good to know. I love how you organized your pages. Adorable!

DIY: Pillow-style

Project of the day: a cute homemade pillow! I saw this pretty ruffled pillow on the Jones Design Company blog, and thought I’d give it a shot! I bought a 14×28″ pillow form from hobby lobby, along with white and gray fabric.
First, cut out two pieces of fabric for the pillow case, about one inch larger than the pillow form (I cut two pieces of 15×29″ fabric)

Next, cut out strips of the fabric to be used as the ruffle. I made mine about 2 1/2 times as long as the width of the pillow (35″) and 1 inch wide. Next, sew a basting stitch down the middle of each skinny piece of fabric. Since I don’t have my own sewing machine, I used my mom’s, and hers is apparently having tension problems so it automatically created the gathers in the fabric. That was handy!

Next, pin each stip of fabric onto one of the main pillow pieces. After they are pinned down, stitch right down the middle of each of them to attach the ruffles to the fabric.
Next, sew the two pieces of outer fabric together, inside out with a half-inch seam allowance. Turn the pillow case right-side out and then the hard part: stuff the big pillow form into the case!
And there you have it: a pretty ruffly pillow! I’m excited to try different variations of this!
I just had to take some detail shots in my mom’s sewing room (she is a really talented quilter!):
