Snow Day Part II

What does a photographer do on a snow day? These past couple days have been lovely, as I’ve done “just-for-fun” things as well as productive things. Wednesday morning, my roommate Sam made delicious cinnamon rolls for us = a great way to start a snow day! I made a list of business goals for myself as I dream about what next year may look like, I snuggled up in bed with a stack of books at my side, and made puppy chow!

On Thursday, after the blizzard had passed, I ventured out to take some photos. Brrrr! I think the news said it was -16 degrees! That’s the kind of cold air that burns when I breathe it in! It was so fun driving around town, looking for scenes to photograph. I loved these swings, covered in snow! The bottom right photo below is actually a car underneath all that snow! Ugh, what a dreadful task that person has before he/she can go anywhere!

A cozy scene. This is my roommate Sam, reading through a destination wedding magazine by the light of our lamp (yes, we now have a lamp on our table! ha!).

Yesterday I went home to continue the tradition of baking Christmas cookies with my Mom. I only had a few hours to be there, so we weren’t able to go all-out like we usually do, but we had time to make a few goodies.

I drove to work at Mercy hospital yesterday (Bella Baby Photography) extra early, not knowing how bad the roads would be. I got there super early, which was perfect, because there was a Christmas arts/crafts fair in the hospital. I went in hoping to find a couple unique Christmas gifts…and though I did leave with a couple gifts, I couldn’t resist buying this for myself! I love the quote on it; it’s so true for me. As I was growing up, I took up many different artistic hobbies, and with each one I thought, “YES! This is it! This is what I’m going to do!” Oil painting, jewelry making, card-making, scrapbooking, drawing portraits with graphite. Then, a few months later, I would grow bored with the hobby and start something new! But then I found my love of photography…and I can’t imagine ever becoming bored with creating photos.

Being an artist certainly is a journey!

An exciting, scary, challenging, satisfying journey!

Snow Day!

I feel like I’m in high school all over again…except I wouldn’t have had school tomorrow anyway! A snowstorm blew in today, and most schools in the area were out two hours early. I was brought back to those good ‘ole days when I would stay up late, hoping and hoping to see Indianola listed at the bottom of Channel 8 news as one of the schools canceled for the next day. Snow Days were the best part about winters in Iowa!

I was asked to speak at Indianola High School’s career day tomorrow, to a couple classrooms of sophomores who have expressed interest in photography. I was nervous about preparing a half-hour presentation, as it feels like such a long time since I’ve done anything like that. The more I prepared for it, though, the more exciting it became because I was reminded how much I love what I do! There is so much that goes into running a photography business, and I find that the more I learn about it, the more I love it! But because of this crazy snow storm, all schools around here are closed tomorrow, and I don’t get to share all this cool stuff with high school students. I will have to wait until next year!

Here’s a photo from my deck tonight. Now that, my friends, is a lot of snow! Even though I wouldn’t have had to be in school all day tomorrow, I love having a snow day!
